SAILING TO THE MONUMENTS OF THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION

This itinerary describes a sailing trip around some of the most important monuments of Ancient Greek Civilization. These monuments are located in the Saronic Gulf, historically located between Athens and Argos, the center of the Mycenaean Civilization.

A typical day of this trip includes a sailing trip of about 2 hours, visit to an ancient monument, as well as swimming in the crystal waters of the Saronic Gulf. Sailing conditions are usually calm in the area and bays are protected. There are also different options during your trip, ports and coves that are more or less suitable depending on weather conditions, preference to spend the night on anchor or in port. So, this is a suggested sailing route that can easily be adapted to your personal preferences.

It is worth noting that this itinerary is feasible whether the trip starts in Alimos marina, or the marinas at its west, such as Kallithea, Zea marina in Piraeus, Nea Peramos or Pachi, the latter being located closer to the islands of Salamis and Aegina.

The Temple of Poseidon and the marvelous bay at Cape Sounion
Day 1: Alimos marina - Cape Sounion, Temple of Poseidon (23 nautical miles)

Our trip started in Alimos, the nearest marina to Athens City Centre. Distance from airport is 40-60min. by mini van, not much longer by bus service. Provisions was also easy, as everything was arranged online by the company. We left the marina early in the afternoon and arrived after 3-4 hours of calm seas in Cape Sounion. The bay is big enough for many yachts to anchor in a modest distance from the shore and indeed is a busy destination. It offers good shelter to north winds (but not to southern or eastern winds) and you can enjoy your swim and relaxation right. The spectacle of the Poseidon Temple is equally unique and impressive at night, when it is lit - shining its glory on the bay.  Dinner is possible either onboard, or at the restaurants on the shore.

Next morning we hiked up to the ancient Temple, 15 minutes from the beach. Getting to the beach by our dinghy was our morning adventure! There is a unique feeling viewing the endless Aegean Sea under the ancient columns of the Temple. According to the myth, the ancient king of Athens, Aegeus ended his life in cape Sounion when he saw the boat of his son Theseus returning from Crete with black sails, false sign that his son was dead.

Day 2: Cape Sounion - Aegina island, bay of Agia Marina (23 nautical miles)

After returning to the yacht, we lifted the anchor and sailed West, to the island of Aegina and the bay of Agia Marina. We had a northern wind of 15-20 knots so we enjoyed quite intense sailing route, with moderate waves. The monument to visit is the Temple of Afaia, constructed in the 5th century BC. Distance from the shore is 45 minutes walking.

It tooks us close to 3 hours to reach Aegina. Upon our arrival to the bay of Agia Marina, we anchored near the northern shore of the bay, close to some spectacular rocks, and enjoyed a dive in the crystal sea. In the evening we got to the shore by the dinghy, and had dinner on the restaurants nearby.

The bay of Agia Marina is protected from North-NW winds but it is wide, so there is swell inside, if the wind is over 15-20 knots. The bay is exposed to winds with east or southern direction, and is affected with rather large waves.

The dock at the north side of the bay is another alternative to spend the night, and protects significantly from the swell. The sea is clear, even around the yachts, and a cute beach is located just a few hundred meters away. Keeping the sea clean is vital in such small and popular swimming areas,

The next morning we got up early and hiked uphill for 45 minutes. We visited the Temple of Afaia, a magnificent monument of the Classical Era of the Ancient Greek Civilization, dedicated to the Godess Afaia. Relatively to other monuments, it is maintained in good condition. After a short tour at the Temple, we returned to the yacht and sailed to the port of Epidavrus, 20 nautical miles to South.

Day 3: The Old Port of Epidavrus and the Ancient Theater

We arrived in Epidavrus port at noon, and were happy to find a spot on the small dock. Soon after, we took a taxi and visited the Ancient Theatre. It is a rare monument and the oldest theater in the world where plays still take place. It operates as a theater venue on Fridays and Saturdays only, July and early August, so one should enquire for custom dates for their sailing trip, in order to actually watch a play. However, visiting off-hours is also a wonderful experience, as there are main interesting tales and facts associated with the area and the monument.

Day 4: Moni island - Or visit the Castle of Mycenae

If the crew is particularly interested in ancient monuments, next day you can visit the ancient Mycenae castle, dated from 2.000 years BC. With its impressive exterior walls and inside architecture it's really worth visiting but it's only accessible by vehicle (about 60km, one hour drive). Consult the charter company for options of how to get there and search online for minivans.

Instead of a land tour, we preferred next day to sail to the beautiful islet of Moni. It is a small islet near Aegina, with crystal waters and a beautiful beach. We visited the island and we also had the chance to meet a few deers and peacocks. What a strange mix of inhabitants on a tiny island of the Aegean Sea!

Part of the Ancient Theater of Epidavros
The amazing coast of Aegina island

Overall, there are plenty of options regarding the remaining of the day, after returning from the tour to the Ancient Theater. Additionally to the castle of Mycenae and Moni island, sailing to Aegina (main port of Perdika) compose a satisfactory option.

Another beautiful port is in Methana peninsula, named Vathi. It is a small and cozy bay, full with trees. In the small port you can find family taverns, preparing local food. Methana is a volcanic mountaine, with fascinating hiking routes. Even watching the rock formations by the sea, at its western coast, is interesting, as the marks of the volcano are so obvious. As Methana are not tormended by the massive tourist waves, it comprises a wondeful destination for your trip.

Please have in mind that the port of Vathi has a very narrow entry with a barrier at the center, so it needs a lot of attention when entering. While sailing to Vathi, you may wish to swim at the 'Sunken City", that this the underwater remains of a Roman Wall. It is impressive to swim over this wall, which is conspicious even with a mask.

Finally, the port of Korfos is another option for an additional sailing destination. Korfos is a well protected bay, surrounded by greenery hills. In the town there are cozy (and low cost) restaurants, to enjoy local, delicious food.

Day 5: Agkistri island

Next sailing destination is the beautiful island of Agkistri. We sailed to the south west part of the island, by the small isle of Dorrousa.

The landscape forms one of the nicest coves, where plenty of sailing yachts ancor every day.  Yachts anchor near the rocks using line to the shore. The sea is deep so use a lot of chain, but it's also particularly transparent.

Pine trees up to the sea level give a green color to the sea, which is usually calm. Choose your spot to anchor, according to the wind direction. The cove is so calm that visitors are tempted to spend more days there and relax in a place of unique beauty.

The coast of Agkistri, Doroussa island lies at the background
Aponissos, near Doroussa, on the coast of Agkistri. On the right side, the white house is the restarant tuhat we had dinner

In the evening, we visited the tavern by the cove for dinner in a natural and unspoiled landscape. A table reservation was necessary, as the restaurant was full, same almost every night.

Please note that despite the overall calmness, the western coast of Agkistri can be affected by northern winds, and also by westernlies, which actually might get quite strong. Due to the depth of the bay, this could create uncertainty for the anchor holding. Hence, this place is strongly recommended, assuming that forecast is clear of any strong winds.

Day 6: Agkistri - Salamina island (13 nm)

We enjoyed most of the day relaxing, from one swimming spot to the next. Agkistri coast is spectacular also on the eastern side, with coves with crystal, bright and transparent waters. Later on, while sailing north toward Salamina island, we made a stop in Metopi, an island a couple of miles from Agkistri. It forms another safe cove to northern winds, the sea colour is also amazing and the sea bottom is seen clearly at the depth of the 4-6 meters of anchoring. Swimming could not be more relaxing and amusing than in those swimming spots.

Salamis has some signifant ancient monuments and important history, expanding over 4.000. There are remains of ancient settlements starting on the 2nd millenia BC, reaching their peak on the 13th century BC! The remains of the Ancient Palace of Mycenean Age travels us back to the glory of Ancient Greece, as it is attributed to the Homer's hero, Aias.

Last but not least, in Salamis you can find the monument of the Salamis Sea Battle, that took place on 480 BC. The victory of the Athenians over the Persian forces had a vital role in the survival and development of the Greek Civilzation, that fueled the modern Western culture.

Day 7: Return to Base (14 nautical miles)

There is some time to explore the ancient monuments in Salamis island, but it better be planned in advance. Return from Salamis island takes around 2 hours, so we had an easy return to Alimos marina, not too late in the afternoon.

Alimos is in ideal location for visiting Athens City Center, after the yacht's check-out. An interesting sailing trip with so many experiences had come to an end.
