SAILING TRIP OF 2 WEEKS IN THE SARONIC GULF AND PELOPONNESE COAST

Sail the Eastern Coast of Peloponnese: Start in Athens - sail to Kithira islands

This sailing route expands on the Eastern Coast of Peloponnese, starting from Athens marinas, and reaching Kithira, the island south of Peloponnese, crossing a straight line of 110 nautical miles - total miles covered are 289. However, 2 weeks allow for a rather comfortable trip, with average 3-4 hours sailing per day, and maximum daily distance covered are 35 miles - about 5 hours top.

Destinations include historic ports, awesome swimming spots and serene coves, combining the unparalleled natural beauty with some of the landmarks of the Greek Civilization. There are many nights that need to be spent on anchor, so people should be font of this and prepared accordingly, from provisions, to water supply of the yacht.

Weather conditions need to be calm. This wider area is affected by the Winds, both from northern and southern direction, creating big waves and uncertainty on anchorage. If weather is calm, the overall landscape and sailing conditions are wonderful - so, our advice would be not to hesitate to start this trip, but be ready to adjust the route should weather conditions change during its course!

This trip started in Alimos marina, the main marina in Athens, since our ideal yacht was based in that spot. However, the same route can be adopted regardless of the starting marina in Athens Coast, west from Pachi and Nea Peramos, to Lavrion, the easternmost marina of Athens.

Read below the highlights of such an interesting and fulfilling sailing trip!

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Alimos marina - Aigina, Bay of Agia Marina (12 nautical miles)

The trip started on Saturday afternoon, after all details were eventually sorted. We set sail to Aegina island, the closest to the marina, and arrived to the bay of Agia Marina after a calm sailing trip of 2 hours. It was a sheer pleasure to enjoy the sunset on the way, and managed to anchor in the bay before the dark falls. There could not be a nicer start for our long-awaited sailing experience.

Day 2: Agia Marina - Poros (16 nm)

We were excited to start the first morning on the yacht as early as possible, so we enjoyed a swim in the warm waters right after the sunrise. We had breakfast and set sail to Poros island. It was a nearby destination, the trip lasted just a couple of hours, but we preferred to have an easy start to the overall trip. Upon arrival to Poros island, we had a swim in the beautiful bays at the west coast, and anchored to the busy port in the afternoon.

Spending the night on anchor was also possible and sustained an attractive option, due to the safety of anchorage and the beautiful landscape. However, Poros is an interesting and busy port, with plenty of restaurants and bars by the pier, so we preferred to live the experience. Besides, Poros is the largest port in the wider area, so berthing was easy, at least before the port gets packed, which it did, definetely before the sunset.

Day 3: Poros - Spetses island (26 nm)

We left the port of Poros early in the morning and headed east, toward Spetses island. First we made a stop for a swim in the eastern coast of Poros, in the exotic coves after Monastiri beach. Soon, we lifted the anchor and continued our trip, by the eastern coast of Peloponnese.

Spetses is 4 hours away; there was time for another swim in the coast of Peloponnese (e.g. the bay of Agios Emilianos), but we prefered to enter the port early and moor. Soon we left the yacht and headed by the dinghy to the shore to explore the picturesque town of Spetses.

The historic, Old Port of Spetses island
Spetses, a famous sailing destination

Mooring in the Old Port of Spetses is challenging, since there are no docks. Hence, it is virtually necessary to be assisted by the linesmen in the port, who give guidance and assistance to ensure safe anchorage.

We enjoyed the evening in that beautiful place. We walked in the traditional alleys of the little town and evetually had dinner in one of the restaurants of the Old Port - reservation is mandatory to find a table. Spetses used to be the motherland of the Shipowners of older era, and has kept the tradition and class of those years.

Day 4: Spetses - Bay of Kiparissi (20 nm)

The next day we continued south, toward the coast of Peloponnese and Kiparrisi. This is a large bay, surrounded by steep mountaine slopes and tall trees. The landscape is astonishing, while the sea has an intense, blue color. The sea was calm, so we could berth alongside the small jetty. We had dinner in the village, in a small, family run tavern.

In a windy day, this jetty becomes unfriendly, because the wide bay allows for the development of swell. In this case, the best option is a small dock at the northern side of Kiparissi bay. However, walking from the northern dock to the port is more than 2 km distance, which makes it near to impossible to visit. Nature is wonderful though in every corner of the bay.

Day 5: Kiparissi - Monemvasia (21 nm)

Next day we continued our trip toward south, after a refreshing swim from the yacht. Soon we arrived in the marina of Monemvasia, berthed the yacht, and left, to explore the Castle of Monemvasia. The spectacle is unique. The Castle protects a steep rock, connected to the mainland only through a thin strip of land with a bridge. Walking further on the Rock, the path narrows from the hill on the one side and the sea on the other. Soon, we arrived to the huge gate of the Wall, which we passed only to enter the Town, which looks intact since the Medieval Ages, when it was built. Walking the alleys of the Town was magical, as at every corner we would discover another monument, another old house - castle looking, or an Orthodox church. Meanwhile,  numerous cafes and restaurants that operate in the Town make it more friendly, without disturbing at all the traditional spirit of the place.

After a short break, we walked at the top of the Rock, to the Old Palace. The final line of defence for the Palace was built there, after we hiked the only path to the top. This is the meaning of Monemvasia, "One Path". As we walked to the top, we realized the reason. Only ruins have survived from the palace at the top of the Rock, but we could still feel the atmosphere of the place, when it was alive and busy. Visiting the Castle of Monemvasia felt like the experience of a lifetime. After the walk, we had dinner in the Old Town and returned to the yacht.

Day 6: Monemvasia - Bay of Avlemonas, Kithira island (33 nm)

After an unforgetable day in Monemvasia, we got prepared for the next trip to Kithira island. First we refilled the yacht with sweet water and provisions, since we had planned to spend the following nights on anchor, away from any organized port.

We headed south, passing the coast of Peloponnese, and the cape Maleas. In a windy day, the sea gets extremely rough there, so it might not be wise to cross. However, we had a calm day, and sailing was smooth and fun.

Day 7: Visit the port of Kapsali (5 nm)

It took us about 5 hours to reach Kithira southern beach. Upon arrival, we anchored in a awesome place, at the endless cove of Kithira. We enjoyed swimming and exploring the long beach. It was a relaxing and wonderful afternoon.

The next day we followed the same plan, snorkeling, swimming and relaxing. In the afternoon we docked in the bay of Kapsali. It is a small place, but cozy and picturesque, with crystal waters. Another wonderful day had passed.

Day 8: Kithira - Elafonissos

Kithira sustained the southernmost destination of our trip. The next day we started the return trip; first destination was the island of Elafonissos, close to the southeastern coast of Peloponnese. The beaches on the southern coast of Elafonissos are spectacular, with golden, thin sand extended all over, and some sand dunes further, inside the  land. We anchored on the protected bay, and enjoyed another day swimming and relaxing in the beaches of the island.

The coves of Elafonissos
Amazing Elafonissos
Day 9: Elafonissos - Gerakas bay (35 nm)

The next day the trip included the return to the Eastern Coast of Peloponnese. We were lucky that winds remained low, because the trip would be extremely hard with rough sea.

Gerakas is a very special place, a wide bay enclosed in the land of Peloponnese. Sailing yachts can approach only at the entry of the bay, as depths become too shallow inside. In any case, it is a spectacular spot which soothen our tired minds after the long trip of the day.

Day 10: Gerakas - Porto Fokiano (19 nm)

On our way up the Peloponnese coast, we anchored to the bay of Port Fokiano, southern of the Argolic Gulf. It is a beautiful, deep bay, well protected from almost all wind directions, but the southerlies. The trip was not long, it took us less than 3 hours to get there, so soon we enjoyed another relaxing day in a wonderful beach, and had dinner on the yacht - lucky that we had been supplied with enough provisions for these 'eploring' days

The long beach of Porto Fokiano, with crystal waters
The amazing coast of Hydra island
Day 11: Port Fokiano - Hydra (31 nm)

We started the day early, as another long trip was ahead of us. It took us around 4 hours to reach Hydra. First we made a stop at the southwest coast of the island for a swim, in a wonderful bay with beautiful, calm sea, surrounded by the greenery hills of the island. The landscape is enriched by the large rocks near the coast of Hydra, just opposite of Dokos island. We didn't spend a lot of time there, since we wanted to find a spot in the port.

Hydra port is among the nicest in Greece, due to the traditional buildings and houses that surround it. A unique characteristic are the hills that surround the port, creating an amphitheatric view around the town, like the stage of the theater was the port! One of the nicest views of the town is from the yacht's deck, where you can admire the largest part of the picturesque town. Walking by the long shore, or in the narrow alleys is a wonderful experience. Hydra needs time to walk it through,  as every building has its own charm and little detail to notice.

The picturesque port of Hydra
The entry of the port, open to northern winds

However, this magnificent port has its difficulties, and it is not recommended to enter without high attention. The port is very small, yachts drop anchor in both sides (i.e. both northern and southern pier) and anchors can easily cross, as the 'nothern' yacht drops anchor very close to the 'southern' yachts and vice versa. When yachts fill the docks, a second row of yachts is piled, usually toward the northern pier, reducing further the available space for maneuvering. Hence, entering the port with high winds is almost forbidden. Special care is required when lifting up the anchor, to avoid getting twisted with other anchors. Special care is also required to avoid the fixed chains on sea bed that hold the ferry that berths inside the port.

Day 12: Hydra - Perdika port in Aegina island (22 nm)

The next day we continued our trip back North. Most yachts in Hydra port sail away around 9 am. Especially the yachts on the second row need to make way to thefirst-row yachts, and as anchors have dropped closed to each other, everyone needs to be alert in the morning.

We made a stop in the bay of Tselevinia, 5nm northeast of Hydra port. It is an amazing swimming spot, with crystal transparent waters, and exciting rock formations. We enjoyed snorkeling for about an hour and soon we continued our trip to Aegina island.

The cove at Tselevinia - crystal waters among scattered rocks
The port of Perdika, Aegina island

Many alternative options are available in the area, such as the small port of Perdika, the island of Moni, just outside of the port, the bay of Klima in southern Aegina, protecting from Northern winds, even just anchoring outside of the main port of Aegina. We picked up the port of Perdika, as we preferred to have an easy day on a peaceful place. Only the western winds can hit Perdika, which are not very common, but swell can be really risky if it comes. In the evening, we enjoyed dinner and drinks in the family taverns by the dock

Day 13: Perdika - Agkistri island

The next day we started early, in order to make it to more swimming spots, including bays in Moni and Agkistri islands. The amazing sailing destinations include the island of Moni, where it is worth walking to the beach, and meet the deers and peacocks that live on the island and the bays in the eastern coast of Agkistri, again to admire the incredibly bright colours of the sea. We spent the day swimming from the yacht, snorkeling and relaxing in some wonderful spots.

The island of Moni
The serene coves of Agkistri island

In the afternoon we set sail toward the western coast of Agkistri island, in the bays by Doroussa island. The bays are wonderful, covered by greenery hills. Sea is deep in the bays, so it is required to drop a lot of anchor chain (50 meters or more), in order to secure the yacht. We had already booked a table in the tavern Aponissos 2 days in before, near the bays, and in the evening we used the dinghy to  get there for dinner.

Attention is only needed in case of strong winds, since the bays are rather wide so do not protect very well. In case of calmer winds, the place is beautiful as heaven!

Day 14: The return trip to Alimos marina (23 nm)

As we reached the last day of our sailing trip, we had a slow start; did some swimming in the beautiful cove and we left before noon, only to make another stop in Metopi island. Metopi is a small, uninhabited island between Aigina and Agkistri, about an hour from Doroussa. The waters are shallow and the bright sand on the sea bed create again a unique colour in the sea. We enjoyed swimming for a couple of hours, had lunch, and soon we sailed to Alimos marina.

A wonderful sailing trip was just completed.
