ONE WEEK SAILING AROUND THE DODECANESE ISLANDS

Read the sailing trip in Dodecanese islands, starting from Rhodes and visiting the small, secluded islands of Dodecanese. Visit picturesque ports and marvelous bays, enjoy the calm winds and the crystal waters in the area.

The trip is rather easy, due to the safe ports and protected bays, especially to the prevailing northwestern winds of summer season. Winds offer vivid sailing conditions, but are considerably calmer than the Northern Aegean Sea prevailing in the Northern Aegean Sea. In any island there is a bay that offers a wonderful landscape and safe anchorage, in case you prefer to spend the night in nature, rather than the port. Most times, you can enjoy also a visit to the mainland, as well as traditional cuisine.

Day 1 – Saturday: Rhodes island: Sail from the Marina to the bay of Ladiko (7 nautical miles - nm)

Our embarkation took place on Saturday afternoon from Rhodes marina, close to the main town of this beautiful island. We embarked in the afternoon and we wanted to leave the port as soon as possible. Our options were limited, as there were only few hours before dark falls, but we wanted to avoid staying to over for the night, as much as we wanted also to avoid sailing at night.

It was fortunate that there were no winds blowing at the coming night, so we decided to head south, to the bay of Ladiko. The protection to the winds is not great, so we could stay overnight only because the winds will be calm.

We left Rhodes marina around 5 pm, and an hour later we anchored and enjoyed a swim in the wonderful bay

Day 2: Port of Simi island (30 nm)

After a morning swim, we headed up north by Rhodes and then turned west, toward the port of Simi. It is a beautiful, picturesque port, with wonderful, colourful houses, built in a narrow and well protected bay. Its high depth makes impossible to use the anchor, so there are lazy lines and buoys in the port and the stuff in the port help to berth safely. The port is busy on the land, and has swell on the water, but still it is an impressive place which we were fortunate to visit. We spent the day in the port admiring the beauty all over

Day 3: Palloi port, Nisiros island (33 nm)

The third day we continued west to the port of Palloi in Nisiros island. After 5-6 hours of happy sailing, we berthed in the small port. Palloi port is a quiet place with several berthing spots and only some houses around. It is a quiet, relaxing place.

Nisiros island is famous for its volcano, still active on the top of the mountain. We rented a mini-van and visited the sight. It is a unique natural phenomenon, with the craters and the peculiar ground  colour; we had not experienced anything similar in the past. We explored the island, visiting also the village of Emporios, high on the mountains, as well as the second port of Nisyros, Mandrakia. It was an active and very interesting day

Day 4: Tilos island, bay of Eristos (18nm)

We left Nisyros after an enjoyable breakfast and headed to the island of Tilos. We sailed toward south, so the northwestern wind created favourable sailing conditions. We wanted to spend the day in a bay, and Eristos, on the southern coast of Tilos island, is an ideal option. The bay offers great shelter to the northern and western winds, has a very large size, as well as a wonderful, sandy beach. The bay is surrounded by high mountains, creating a spectacular landscape. We enjoyed a beautiful day in the beach, relaxing there until dark.

Day 5: Chalki island (19nm)

The next day, we sailed further south, to Chalki island. The island is gifted with a port of amazing beauty, with colourful houses built as low as the wave, next to the port. The available berths are around 10, a tiny number for the popularity of Chalki. So, either you arrive early in the morning, or you can anchor further away in the safe bay of Chalki.

The sea in the port is crystal clear; we had a swim off the boat right after berthing. Then, we visited the small beach of Potamos, where the sea had again that crystal, and transparent sensation with turquoise color. We closed the day with dinner at the colorful and picturesque port.

Day 6: Alymia islet (6 nm)

The uninhabited islet of Alymia is located close to Chalki, only few miles  to the East. We set sail after a long breakfast in Chalki, and swim off the yacht, as we could not have enough of that wonderful spot.

However, Alymia is also amazing. The main bay is large, but requires attention while navigating to the beach. Regardless of the wind direction, there is also a place in the bay that offers great shelter. We had a wonderful night under the serenity of this beautiful bay.

Mandraki, the Old Port of Rhodes
Day 7: Return to Rhodes

In the last day of the trip, we enjoyed another beautiful morning on the crystal waters of the Aegean Sea. At noon we set sail to the marina of Rhodes, where we arrived at 17:00. In the evening, we visited the Old Town of Rhodes and Mandraki, the traditional port
