ONE WEEK SAILING IN THE SARONIC ISLANDS: START FROM LAVRION, VISIT SPETSES, POROS AND MORE ISLANDS

A sailing route from Lavrion to the Saronic Gulf: Wonderful Sailing Destinations

The Saronic Gulf is a wonderful sailing area in Greece. It is accessible from Athens, the easiest entry point to Greece from overseas. It is gifted with wonderful swimming spots, turqouise waters, small, cozy bays and uninhabited islands, while the ports of most islands are steeped in the history of the Greek people.

Regarding the sailing conditions, the Saronic islands are protected from the Northern Winds that prevail in the summer months, especially July and early August. While the Cyclades islands are tormended by the winds, the Saronic offers a more comfortable solution, away from the gusts and big waves of the open Aegean Sea. Hence, sailing holidays become more safe and relaxing, with better anchorage conditions, as well as smoother sailing and better chances to avoid discomfort, overall. In most cases islands are located close to each other (especially compared to the longer distances of the Cyclades islands), hence shorter sailing time is required during the trip. If someone wants, farther destinations are also suggested, to increase the miles that can be covered within a week.

Since this Trip starts from Lavrion, it can be used as an alternative option, in case the initial plan was sailing to the Cyclades islands, but the meltemi does not allow. Considering that this route is followed in a week with strong winds in the Saronic Gulf, particular advice is provided according to our experience, of where to anchor safely and at which points to be more careful, following from our experience.

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Lavrion Port - Bay of Anavissos (13 nautical miles)

The port of Lavrion is a very attractive base for your sailing trip in the Cyclades and the Saronic islands. Located close to Athens International Airport, there is less than 30 minutes drive from the airport to the marina. The village by the main port is very convenient: super markets and nautical shops make life easy, while there are plenty of restaurants and bars, to enjoy an evening there. The Olympic marine is a bit farther than the village, but only 5 minutes drive by taxi.

The Bay of Agios Nikolaos, in Anavissos; View toward NE

The yacht was ready on time and all details were completed early (yacht cleaning, paperwork, provisions, etc.), so we had plenty of time to sail before the dark falls. Considering the strong winds, our choice for the night was the bay of Anavissos. Lavrion is far to head to another port (5 hours to Poros, 4 to Agia Marina in Aegina), so we opted for spending the first night on anchor. The closest bays that protect from the northerlies is Sounion (or even Punta Zeza, a bay southern of Lavrion port), but in both places the winds were forecasted to blow strong through out the night. Anavissos is nearly a couple of hours sailing from Lavrion, but the winds drop considerably compared to other options. The bay is wide enough for many yachts, adding to the safety of this option.

We sailed to Anavissos, using the head sail only from time to time. Despite the heavy winds we approached the bay safely, anchored in low depth (around 4 meters) using a lot of anchor chain, and enjoyed safely our first night on the yacht.

Day 2: Anavissos - Poros island (27 nm)

Next day we enjoyed an amazing sailing trip! After a morning swim and some good breakfast (appropriate for the rough seas that was waiting for us), we set sail to South, toward Poros island. We were on a broad reach; the yacht was running fast under 25 knots of wind, especially when surfing the waves, which were reaching up to 2-3 meters in height. Our yacht had an average 8-9 knots speed in the beginning, although the wind dropped slightly as we got half the way to Poros.

Upon our arrival to Poros island, we docked immediately at one of the few available spots. Since the winds were fierce, all yachts were looking for a safe shelter for the evening, and the port of Poros is one of the largest and safest in the area near Athens marinas. Due to the popularity of the port, ensuring a berthing spot for our yacht was quite important. We took some rest after the exciting trip and enjoyed dinner in one of the local restaurants by the port.

Day 3: Poros - Spetses island (26 nm)

Another great sailing day was lying ahead. The wind was forecasted as strong as the previous day, so we left the port early and sailed to Spetses island. After we passed the cape of Tselevinia, we headed west, having Hydra island on our portside and Peloponnese coast on our starboard. The waves were not as tall as the previous day, and then wind was on our beam, and the yacht sailed smoothly. We made a stop for a swim in Peloponnese coast, opposite to the town of Hydra, but the swell never stopped. Soon we continued our trip to Spetses. We anchored to the Old Port of Spetses, with the valuable help of the local linesmen.

The historic, Old Port of Spetses island
Spetses, a famous sailing destination

The Old Port of Spetses offers safe shelter, despite the strong, northern winds. Locally, the wind drops compared to the open sea, while the sea bottom is shallow and sandy, hence quite safe. There is no dock in this port, but very few. Usually we anchor, secure the yacht with ropes to the walls, and then go out for dinner and walk in the picturesque alleys of the traditional little town. Spetses used to be the motherland of the Shipowners of older era, and has kept the tradition and class of those years.

Day 4: Spetses - Port of Ermioni (11 nm)

Spetses comprised the farthest point of our trip. More options were available, should one wished for more miles and sailing adventure. North of Spetses island, there is the port of Porto Heli with a public port and an organized marina, but the landscape of the town is not so interesting, like Spetses or Poros islands. The small island of Hinitsa nearby definetely is a wonderful destination for swim, but not well protected to northern winds.

Hinitsa, a small islet close to Peloponnese coast

East of Hinitsa, there are the bays of Costa and Agios Aimilianos. Without offering a spectacular landscape, these coves offer a safe solution for anchorage and a relaxing swim.

The Argolic Gulf lies at the west of Spetses. Should you decide to sail longer, Nafplion port is an interesting option to the North, and a historic monument, hence sailing upwind, while usually the winds drop considerably in the Argolic Gulf. However, the additional miles (another 26 nautical miles from Spetses) prevented us from going farther. Astros and Kiparissi offer more alternative options, but berthing could be problematic with strong winds.

Mandrakia, the southern port of Ermioni

After we left Spetses, we sailed straight to the port of Ermioni. Our plan was to take the ferry from there and visit the island of Hydra.

We anchored at the southern port of Ermioni, Mandrakia. We had to drop anchor at 20-22 meters deep, so we needed to use almost all the anchor chain we had. The reason is that altough the wind comes from the side of the mooring lines, there is some swell in the bay of Mandrakia, so only a strong anchor would ensure the safety of the yacht. We saw yachts being uncomfortable and eventually dropping anchor again and again, until it was holding good.

The port of Hydra is a wonderful, historic destination, probably the most beautiful port in Greece!!

Unfortunately, its size is very small and is impacted by the northern winds. The high number of yachts make things more complicated, hence we decided that it was not safe to visit Hydra by the yacht. We preferred instead to visit by ferry, taking it from Ermioni port.

The port of Hydra

We spent most of the day wandering in the alleys of the town and the shore by the port. Everything is well maintained, and the aristocrautic atmosphere of the old ages is preserved. Buildings are impressive, reminding the past glory of the island, as the shipping center of the 19th century. Ship owners of both Spetses and Hydra dominated the commercial activity in previous centuries across a large part of the Mediterranean Sea. The historic importance is illuminated by the fact that these shipowners sacrificed their ships and wealth, putting everything they had in the service of their country, during the Independence War (1821-1831 AD).

We returned in the evening to Ermioni port, full with the impressive pictures of Hydra island.

Day 5: Ermioni - Poros island (20 nautical miles)

A challenging route was ahead of us, so we were excited to start the day early! It is worth noting that there are some wonderful swimming spots ahead, such as Dokos, an uninhabited island next to Ermioni, and Tselevinia, a bay at the northeastern cape of Peloponnese. However, both spots are affected by the northern winds. He had a swim in beautiful Dokos and soon headed north, back to Poros.

It was an amazing trip, having to tack within the straight of Hydra. It took us quite a lot of time sailing also against the current (from East to West), and with spectacular waves - we did not expect them, considering that we were sailing among Hydra and Peloponnese. Eventually we made it to Poros, we dropped anchor, enjoyed a relaxing swim and dinner onboard.

The coastline of Poros island

We anchored in the bay of Askeli, eastern side of the port. We are always fond of the western coast of Poros island, with the numerous bays and beautiful, greenery landscape. However, the strong winds could put our anchor at risk, considering the big depths (15-20 meters) and muddy sea bed. It is safer in the western coast to secure the yacht by holding it with ropes to the rocks, but we preferred the easier solution of Askeli, with more shallow sea bed and safer anchorage overall.

Day 6: Poros - Bay of Vari - Varkiza (26 nm)

We started the next day with a swim, breakfast and soon we set sail toward north and the bay of Vari (Varkiza). This was another exciting trip, sailing upwind, against waves of around 2 meters high. It was obvious that staying closer to Aegina decreased the size of the waves, so we followed that route, adding miles, but allowing the yacht to run faster.

One alternative would be to anchor in the bay of Agia Marina. Although it gets strong swell with the northern winds, conditions are smoother for the yachts docked in the pier, protected from the open sea. Have in mind that spots are limited, so the dock would be full by the afternoon.

Day 7: Return to Lavrion

We had already reached the last day of our trip, without realizing how fast the week run. The return to Lavrion still had some challenges ahead, especially the part of the Makronissos straight, where winds get stronger and the current is opposite to the route. It was essential to check the weather forecast and comforting to note that the winds would drop in the afternoon. This allowed a last swim in cape Sounion, and then headed north to Lavrion port. A wonderful and challenging trip had come smoothly to its end!
