SAILING CONDITIONS IN THE SPORADES ISLANDS

A calm sailing  area, covered in unspoiled nature, ideal for carefree sailing trips

Sporades islands lie on the northwestern part of the Aegean Sea.  The region is out of the main path of the 'meltemi', the fierce northerns wind that prevails in the Aegean Sea. Winds blow usually up to 4-5 Beauforts, north – northwest direction. As a result, the winds are rather mild during most of summer season.

The wind usually picks up around noon, which is the time when sailors can enjoy most of the wind. Even when the winds are strong, waves are moderate and hardly affect the course of the yacht.

Sailing in Sporades islands is easy since islands are close to each other and distances are small. Skiathos and Skopelos have numerous bays on their south coasts, Skopelos also on her west coast, Panormos and Agnontas being our favorite. Alonissos has 'magical' bays at its eastern coast and a fabulous old town uphill. When heading to the East, e.g. toward the island of Skyros, winds can be much stronger, as we approach the central Aegean Sea. Checking the weather forecast and realizing the capability of the crew is essential to enjoy your sailing holidays, also in the central Aegean Sea.

A sailing cruise in the Sporades islands offers happy sailing conditions within incredible natural beauty!

In general, there are few things that draw attention when sailing the Sporades islands:

  • The wind and the wave height are generally calm, but they get stronger at the north of the islands and the traits among them (phenomenon that is naturally observed in most sailing regions). During a recent trip in the Sporades, we noticed a wind of 15 knots between Pelion Gulf and Skiathos to fade out completely once we sailed to the north side of the island.
  • In periods when the north winds prevail at day time, they calm down at night, but it is also possible the wind to shift in direction. Have in mind that the yacht might turn around its anchor for the whole night, so always keep a safe distance from neighboring yachts.

  • More caution is needed in the off-season months, Spring and mostly Autumn, after the first half of September. Although the weather remains warm most of the days, it is possible to have a quick and unexpected storm, with rain, thunder and strong winds, elements that can pass in a day, or more. It is essential to receive fresh weather forecast on a daily basis.
  • Last but not least is to protect the invaluable physical environment of the region and restrain from any pollution to the sea (fuels, chemicals, garbage, etc.)
