Sporades islands lie on the northwestern part of the Aegean Sea. The region is out of the main path of the 'meltemi', the fierce northerns wind that prevails in the Aegean Sea. Winds blow usually up to 4-5 Beauforts, north – northwest direction. As a result, the winds are rather mild during most of summer season.
The wind usually picks up around noon, which is the time when sailors can enjoy most of the wind. Even when the winds are strong, waves are moderate and hardly affect the course of the yacht.
Sailing in Sporades islands is easy since islands are close to each other and distances are small. Skiathos and Skopelos have numerous bays on their south coasts, Skopelos also on her west coast, Panormos and Agnontas being our favorite. Alonissos has 'magical' bays at its eastern coast and a fabulous old town uphill. When heading to the East, e.g. toward the island of Skyros, winds can be much stronger, as we approach the central Aegean Sea. Checking the weather forecast and realizing the capability of the crew is essential to enjoy your sailing holidays, also in the central Aegean Sea.
