CYCLADES ISLANDS

Amazing sailing holidays in the most famous Greek islands

Discover Cyclades islands on a sailing yacht

Cyclades Islands compose one the most famous and serene sailing destinations in Greece and probably in the Mediterranean Sea. Situated at the heart of the Aegean Sea, the islands are gifted with a wild landscape and long, sandy beaches, ideal for summer holidays on a sailboat. One can live unforgettable sailing experiences around the 21 major Cyclades islands and the 200 uninhabited smaller ones.

Mykonos, Paros, Ios and of course Santorini are famous for their busy and cosmopolitan nightlife, while the rest of the Cyclades, including the heavenly Small Cyclades(Koufonisia, Donousa, Schinousa, Keros, Irakleia) are famous for their quiet style of holidays and hidden bays, ideal for sailing holidays.

There is a great variety of sailing yachts and catamarans for charter, from luxury to economy class, in different locations, such as Paros, Athens, and more. Weather conditions must be taken into account to ensure a carefree sailing trip in the Cyclades islands. Read more about these topics, based on our years of sailing experience in these waters.

Sailing Routes in the Cyclades

The Cyclades islands compose the largest sailing area in terms of destinations and alternative itineraries. However, it is also the largest area in terms of the distances between the islands, which is a challenging point, considering also the effect of the strong, northern winds (what locals call the "meltemi").

Routes can start either from the center of the Cyclades (Paros and Mykonos), or from Athens marinas, mostly Lavrion. Paros offers plenty of alternative itineraries, either in the Minor Cyclades, east to Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros islands, south to Santorini, and more.

Mykonos can be more problematic, as the winds can be fierce around the cosmopolitan island and it is hard to find a shelter nearby, but if the winds are calmer, there are plenty of options as well.

Despite the larger distance, Athens marinas are the starting point of most sailing cruises to the Cyclades. Lavrion is the port located closer, but Alimos is also three hours only farther. From Athens, it is harder to reach the southern Cyclades in one week, e.g. Minor Cyclades, Amorgos or Folegandros, but other beautiful itineraries are available, such as sailing to Mykonos and Paros or Milos and Sifnos, etc.

Definetely, in two weeks there is time to visit most of the Cyclades islands, starting from any of these ports. Regardless of the specific itinerary, the Cyclades islands allow for wonderful sailing holidays in serene locations.

Weather Conditions in the Cyclades islands

Cyclades is the most challenging sailing area in Greece. The Meltemi wind blows really strong during summer months, reaching or surpassing 7 Beaufort (26 knots or more) during July and August. If you are interested in relaxing holidays without too much tension, think twice before planning your sailing holidays in the Cyclades islands. However, it might be ideal for the experienced sailors who are looking for challenging sailing conditions.

Other months like May, June and especially September and October offer more pleasant weather conditions for a carefree sailing cruise.

Tips for sailing in the Cyclades islands

Since the winds can be very strong in the Cyclades islands, attention is required by the skipper in the following areas:

    • Decide about the route within few days before you start; avoid the Cyclades if wind is expected above 26 knots (6 in Beaufort scale)
    • When starting the day for a specific destination, always have a Plan B in your mind; if for any reason the port or cove is not offering good berth, you must always have an alternative for a safe anchorage at night
    • Ports get full early, considering their small size and the large number of chartering yachts in the Cyclades. Pre-booking a spot is not possible in any port. Plan to arrive early if you really wish to anchor in any port.
    • Cataramans can be affected heavier by the winds and waves, as they slam in a worse way compared to monohull sailing yachts. Especially sailing/motoring upwind on a catamaran can be intolerable for your holidays. Plan your trip carefully, making sure that all passengers will have a relaxing and pleasant experience
