ONE WEEK SAILING CRUISE IN THE IONIAN ISLANDS

A weekly sailing tour in the Ionian Sea and its awesome destinations

The Ionian islands are famous for their incredible natural beauty: the unique colour of the sea, the shiny rocks that cover the coastline and the caves, the wonderful forest reaching the sea level, these are the elements that elevate the Ionian as maybe the most serene and beautiful sailing area among the Greek islands.

The sailing route, as any route in the Ionian Sea is rather an easy one. The weather conditions are usually calm, with winds rising only in the afternoon hours, after 2-3 pm and dropping again before midnight. So, during most of the day you can sail without any wind, or you can choose to enjoy the breeze and sail in the afternoon hours. Most days include few hours only of sailing, with the exception of the trip from / to Paxos island, which requires 5-6 hours from Lefkas.

It is worth noting that the sailing trip started in Lefkas, which is the largest sailing base in the Ionian Sea. This is because of the easy access to Lefkas from land, as well as its proximity to most Ionian islands. Chartering a sailing yacht or catamaran in Lefkas is the most common way to enjoy sailing holidays  in the Ionian Sea

Enjoy the trip description below, along with wonderful photos that we shot during our exploration of this amazing area, and you can watch also the video clip with shots from all destinations of the trip

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Lefkas – Meganissi (10 nautical miles)

Our sailing trip started on Lefkas island; we sailed away on Saturday afternoon, after we filled the yacht with the required provisions, food and drinks. The closest destination was the small islet of Meganissi, 2 hours sail from the port of Lefkas. It was a calm introduction to the experience of sailing!

We reached the bay of Spartochori at the north of Meganissi, just before dark falls. We berthed at the floating piers at the west coast of the cove, which belong to the nearby tavern. They offer safe berth along with a meal in their tavern, a deal we were happy to accept! The tavern is owned by two brothers, one of them helped us to moor with his inflatable dinghy and offered fixed anchorage, so we didn't have to use our own anchor. We had a marvelous dinner at our table on the beach, surrounded by the tall trees down the coast! After dinner, we returned to our boat for a good sleep, after a long and full day!

Note: When sailing from the port of Lefkas, yachts cross the canal. It needs a lot of attention and thorough examination of the chart, before leaving the port.

Day 2: Meganissi - Ithaca (15 nm)

The morning sun offered a wonderful colour to the sea and to the trees around our yacht. We enjoyed breakfast and set sail to Ithaca, a 2-3 hours sailing trip. First, we made a stop for swimming at the southern cape of Meganissi and in the afternoon we continued to Ithaca. We had a swim at the beach of Gidaki and then anchored in the bay of Kioni. It is a lovely bay, with a small village; the dock is too small to fit the number of visiting yachts, which anchor at the rocks around the bay. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the seaside of the picturesque village.

Note: When preparing to anchor, have in mind that the Northwestern wind comes strong in the bay, increasing the difficulty.

Another factor to take into account is the high depth in the bay. In many cases,it requires to anchor at 20 meters depth, which is not the safest scenario when anchoring.

Day 3: Ithaca - Paxos (55 nm)

Our sailing tour in the Ionian continued early in the next day; we left the port on the break of dawn, since we had a long route of 8 hours ahead, toward the island of Paxos.

The sea was calm in the morning, as expected. Early in the afternoon we arrived to Antipaxos islet, where we anchored for a swim. The bay was stunning and gifted with plenty of caves at sea level, which we explored with our snorkel sets. It was an amazing experience.

Later in the afternoon, the northwestern wind started blowing in the bay, and small waves were created. It was time to lift the anchor and head north to the port of Gaios, in Paxos island. The port combines the natural beauty of the Ionian Sea with a picturesque town built around it. Houses are colourful and nicely built, adding to the charm of Gaios port.

Berthing is difficult because of the high number of yachts trying to berth there. Because of its beauty, Gaios is one of the ports gathering the highest number of sailing yachts in the Ionian,

We entered the port from its northern entry, as the southern entry is too shallow, and we were lucky to find a berth without a lot of effort. We enjoyed a nice walk in the town and dined in a restaurant (without being impressed by food quality that we tried).

Day 4: Paxos - Antipaxos through the western caves (12 nm)

After a short breakfast in the beautiful port, we set sail to explore the amazing western coast of Paxos, about which we had heard so many.

We sailed to Lakka, the northern bay of Paxos but we made no stop, as the place was full with sailing yachts. After Lakka, we just sailed close to the shore and made stops once we saw a beautiful cove.

Note: It requires a lot of caution when sailing close to the shore, because of reefs scattered in a few coves of Paxos.

Every stop was amazing, due to the rock formations, the high cliffs and the exciting coves that we snorkelled inside. We spent the day swimming from one cove to the other and we were so inspired by the natural beauty of the island.

The breathtaking coast of  Paxos
The cute islet of Antipaxos

Late in the afternoon, we felt the same northwestern breeze, so it was time to complete our route around Paxos coast.

For the night, we returned to the islet of Antipaxos, to protect from the northwestern wind. The bays are also crystal, with amazing natural beauty. We anchored in a bay just northern of Voutoumi, the "port" of Antipaxos, where we spent the night.

Note: If you prefer to spend the night in the port, options include either Gaios, Lakka, or the bay of Mongonissi, at the southern part of Paxos.

Day 5: Antipaxos - Kefalonia, Fiscardo port (45 nm)

The next morning we started again very early, since we had to return to the southern islands, specifically in Kefalonia. Again, the sea was flat in the morning hours. After few hours of sailing, we made a stop at the western coast of Lefkas. The beach "En Gremnoi" is a stunning place, with high, shiny cliffs mounted over the turquoise waters, leaving space for a long, sandy beach that extends for kilometers, in a serene physical environment.

After few hours of relaxing, we sailed to the bay of Fiscardo, at  the northern coast of Kefalonia island.

Again, we found one of the last spots in the port, since it's full with yachts. If we could not berth inside the port of Fiscardo, we would moor by the rocky coastline around it.

Many spots in the small port are kept clear during the day for berthing of the tourist ships. But in the evening these spots are available, till early next morning. Fiscardo is very beautiful and picturesque place, so we spent the rest of the evening on the shops around the port for coffee, dinner and later drinks.

Day 6: Kefalonia - Ithaca (port of Vathi, 20 nm)

We decided to spend the next day in the beautiful coast of Ithaca. We made an early start because there were plenty of spots to visit, starting from the southern coast of Afales, the northern coast of Ithaca. The beach and the sharp rocks around it create an amazing landscape.

We continued south to the bay of Kato Pigadi. Another wonderful swimming spot, with hills covered by tall trees, and crystal, transparent waters. Overall, Ithaca is gifted with an amazing coast, full with hidden jems and offers the landscape for ideal sailing holidays.

In the afternoon, we arrived to Vathi port. It is a large port, so we managed to find a berthing spot and had dinner in the restaurants by the port.

There were more alternatives for this day, but we prefered to stay in Ithaca. If wanted to reduce the distance from Lefkas, we had the option of Syvota, a cute port at southern Lefkas, or even to set sail for the islets of Kalamos or Kastos. We have followed these options in other trips and have been very satisfactory. The choice is always yours!

Day 7: Return to Lefkas port (28nm)

It was the day to complete the sailing trip to Lefkas island, where we had started. In spite of the amazing places that we had visited, we were feeling that time passed so fast in our trip. We headed  east toward Meganissi, and made a stop in Atokos islet and an amazing cove for a swim and lunch. Swimming there was wonderful, similar to the bays that we visited already. We realized that the beauty of the Ionian islands is shared in every rock; every small islet composed a unique sailing destination.

Soon, as our time was limited, we left Atokos and headed to the port of Lefkas; our wonderful sailing tour in the Ionian islands had come to an end.

We spent the last night in the vivid port of Lefkas and disembarked the yacht early on the next day.
