A RELAXING ONE-WEEK SAILING ROUTE IN THE SARONIC ISLANDS

Sail from Athens to Agkistri, Epidavros, Aegina and Methana, with short passages, crystal-clear waters and beautiful nights at anchor

Short distances, crystal-clear waters and beautiful anchorages close to Athens

This relaxed, one-week sailing itinerary in the Saronic islands from Athens is designed around short distances, beautiful swimming stops and plenty of time to enjoy the sea. The route can start from Alimos Marina, Pachi or Nea Peramos, depending on where your charter yacht is based. Alimos offers the largest selection of charter yachts, while Pachi and Nea Peramos are convenient starting points on the western side of Athens. Very little changes in the itinerary whichever marina you start from, and the same applies to the return at the end of the week. In case of fierce winds in the Aegean Sea, we have followed a similar route from Lavrion port.

What we particularly like about this route is the combination of small ports and nights spent in nature. Agkistri, Doroussa, Moni and Metopi offer clear, bright waters and beautiful places to wake up directly beside the sea. Some of these anchorages are suitable only with particular wind directions, so we choose the exact bay according to the conditions rather than following a rigid schedule. This flexibility is part of the experience: there is almost always another attractive bay or small harbour within a short sailing distance.

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Athens  marinas - Agkistri (22 nautical miles)

Before embarkation to the yacht, the experience of the first day depends on the starting port of your trip. Alimos is the largest and most busy marinas, with few options around, but located close to Athens City Centre. On the contrary, newer marinas in Athens Coast, such as Nea Peramos and Pachi, are located very close to the respective villages, where you can do the shopping, have lunch and walk around, before embarkation. Contact us for more practical details before your arrival to Greece.

The West Coast of Agkistri island, Aponissos
Caption Here

Our first destination is Agkistri, a small and remarkably green island covered with pine trees that in many places grow almost down to sea level. Around the coast, the combination of large trees, rocky coves and exceptionally transparent water creates some of the most beautiful swimming spots in the Saronic Gulf. In light conditions, Aponissos and the southwestern coast are wonderful places to spend the afternoon, while Doroussa and Megalo Bali give us alternatives according to the wind. The southern side of Doroussa is particularly useful with a northerly, although the considerable depth requires attention when anchoring. Megalo Bali, on the eastern side of Agkistri, is another beautiful choice with northern or western winds.

Once evening becomes quiet, spending the night in one of these coves is a very different experience from staying in a marina. Dinner on board, a last swim before sunset and, later, very little around you except the dark outline of the island and the stars above the mast. This is one of the nights when there is really no reason to go anywhere else.

Day 2: Agkistri - Ancient Epidavros (8nm)

With only eight nautical miles ahead, there is no need to leave Agkistri early. Enjoy the morning while the water is still quiet, have another swim and then make the short crossing to Palaia Epidavros. I would suggest reaching the harbour reasonably early if you want to arrange a visit to the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century BC, it is one of the finest surviving ancient Greek theatres, famous for its proportions and extraordinary acoustics. More importantly, it remains a living theatre rather than simply an archaeological monument: performances are normally staged on Friday and Saturday evenings in July and early August. Even without a performance, visiting the theatre adds something completely different to a week otherwise centred around sailing and the sea.

Day 3: Epidavros - Moni island (12 nm)

Before leaving Epidavros, we can stop for a swim over the Sunken City, where ancient remains can be seen beneath the shallow water close to the coast. From there we turn east towards Aegina and Moni. This is one of the passages where, with a moderate northerly, we can put the sails to work and enjoy a livelier crossing instead of simply moving from one swimming spot to the next. After the sail, arriving at Moni feels particularly rewarding: a small, uninhabited island, clear water and another afternoon with very little on the programme except swimming and relaxing on board.

The small island of Moni, with beautiful swimming spots

Moni is best enjoyed in calm weather or with winds from the south; with a strong northerly we simply choose one of the protected bays on southern Aegina instead. The destination may change, but the idea of the day remains the same.

Day 4: Moni - Agkistri (5nm)

Only five nautical miles separate Moni from Agkistri, making this perhaps the slowest day of the entire route. There is time for a long morning swim before leaving Moni and, once back at Agkistri, for exploring a different side of the island. Aponissos, Doroussa and Megalo Bali each have a different character, but they share the same combination that makes us return to Agkistri: intensely clear water, green landscape and small coves where the yacht becomes part of the scenery rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Amazing water colors in Agkistri island

If the weather allows another night at anchor, there is no hurry to end the day. Swim until sunset, eat on board or take the dinghy ashore, and later enjoy the silence of a cove without streetlights, traffic or a busy waterfront. On a clear summer night, lying on deck and looking at the stars can become as memorable as any island or harbour visited during the week. However, in nights without winds anchoring by the port of Agkistri is another option, so you can visit the small, picturesque village.

The cute port of Vathi, surrounded by beautiful nature
Day 5: Agkistri - Port of Vathi, Methana (7 nm)

From Agkistri we cross to the Methana peninsula and the tiny harbour of Vathi. The approach itself reveals a completely different landscape, with the volcanic hills of Methana rising behind the coast. Vathi is small, quiet and pleasantly uncomplicated: a handful of yachts inside the little harbour, fishing boats, houses and tavernas only a few steps from the water. Space is limited, so arriving reasonably early is worthwhile. Once the yacht is secure, this is a good afternoon to walk along the coast or through the surrounding countryside and combine the walk with a swim from a small beach or directly from the rocks. By evening, everything leads back to the waterfront and dinner beside the yacht.

Day 6: Vathi - Metopi island (11nm)

Leaving Vathi for Metopi gives us another opportunity for some proper sailing. With a moderate northerly, the crossing towards Aegina can be an exhilarating part of the week: enough wind to enjoy the yacht under sail and a little more sea than we experience inside the protected bays. Then comes the contrast. Metopi is a tiny, low island surrounded by remarkably bright, shallow water. On a calm afternoon, dropping anchor here feels almost like stopping in the middle of a large natural swimming pool. There is very little ashore and that is precisely why we come.

Metopi is a place for settled conditions rather than strong winds, particularly from the west or south. If the weather does not suit it, Agia Marina is a good alternative, especially with a berth at the dock. Its long beach, clear water and restaurants beside the harbour make it an easy place to spend the final evening away from Athens.

Day 7: Return to the Home Port (19nm)

The final crossing takes us back towards the Athens coast and Alimos, Pachi or Nea Peramos, depending on the yacht's base. Very little changes in the overall route whichever marina we return to. With a good breeze, the last passage can give us one more enjoyable sail before reaching Athens; in stronger conditions the more open waters can also produce some waves and make the return considerably more energetic.

It is a nice way to finish a week that has never been about collecting destinations. We have sailed relatively few miles, returned twice to Agkistri and spent several nights without a port at all. Instead, the week has been about clear water, small harbours, sailing when the wind invites us to sail, swimming when it doesn't, and having enough time to actually enjoy where we are.
