SPETSES, HYDRA, POROS: THE SARONIC ISLANDS IN ONE WEEK

Sail around the historic Greek islands

A sailing cruise in the Saronic Gulf promises an extraordinary and unforgettable experience. The exquisite coves, crystal-clear waters, and historically picturesque ports all combine to create the perfect backdrop for a tranquil journey, carefully curated to showcase beautiful destinations.

The favorable weather conditions and manageable distances between islands make for a smooth sailing adventure. Typically, the winds remain gentle, especially when compared to the more exposed Aegean Sea. Nevertheless, you'll still encounter ample wind on most days, allowing for enjoyable sailing.

This region stands as the birthplace of Ancient Greek Civilization, offering a plethora of ancient monuments and historical sites to explore for those seeking to blend their sailing holiday with cultural enrichment. Highlights include the ancient temple of Athena in Aegina and the renowned Epidavros ancient theater. These represent just a few of the significant landmarks to visit during your cruise in the Saronic Gulf.

Moreover, the historical ports of Spetses and Hydra hold their own allure, offering guests a taste of Greece's aristocratic heritage, combined with leisurely moments on these captivating islands. You can find a detailed suggested route depicted in the chart below for your reference.

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Alimos – Bay of Agia Marina, Aigina (12 nautical miles)

Our sailing adventure kicked off at Alimos Marina, the largest in Athens. We sailed away later in the afternoon (5pm), heading south toward the west coast Aegina island and the bay of Agia Marina. This is the closest bay to Alimos marina, and a beautiful place, with crystal, turqoiuse waters and pinetrees on the hills around the bay.

In general, Agia Marina offers good shelter to Northern / NW winds, but there is swell when the winds get strong. Docking in the new pier smoothens the condition, but the 20-30 spots may get easily full on busy evenings (Saturdays and Thursdays for example). Once anchored, the shoreline restaurants offer a wonderful choice for a relaxing dinner with beautiful view to the Aegean Sea.

A hidden jem in Aegina island

On the other hand, the bay is exposed to South and East, so relevant winds bring in large waves - do not try it under such conditions!

There are more alternatives for the first night of the trip, such as the port of Perdika, which is small though and gets full early, the amazing islet of Metopi with the crystal waters, even the equally beatiful Moni islet, if the winds are calm.

The area between Aegina and Agkistri islands offer many, remarkable swimming spots which are worth to explore.

Day 2: Poros to Hydra island (10 nautical miles)

Hydra is the most spectacular port in the Saronic Gulf, and one of the nicest sailing destinations in Greece. The whole town comprises a historic monument, comprising so many beauties: the picturesque port, the historic buildings, the amphitheatric town surrounding the port.

On the way to Hydra, you can make a stop near the rocks Tselevinia for a swim, or even the south eastern cost of Poros, with beautiful nature.

As an alternative to Hydra, one can visit the port of Ermioni, especially when looking for a safe shelter from the strong north winds. The port of Hydra is tiny, so it’s not easy to berth safely if the winds are strong.

Hinitsa islet with crystal waters

Day 3: Sail to the islet of Hinitsa (17 nm)

Hydra port is peculiar because of the probability to tangle the anchors. It requires a lot of attention through out the day, because it is always possible for your own anchor to drift, after being pulled up by another captain...

In the morning, when most yachts leave the port, it is a good idea to be alert and why not leave the port also early, around 9-10 am. This allows for another wonderful day to start early, regardless of the wind force.

In case of a typical summer day with northern winds, you can enjoy sailing with the wind on an open beam reach, while sailing west toward Spetses and the islet of Hinitsa. Gusts are strong, especially until the strait of Dokos.

If the winds are calm, then it might be a good idea to make a stop for swim at the southwestern edge of the island, at the bay of Bisti. There are wonderful swimming spots in the wider area, with amazing sea brightness and natural colors.

When arriving to Spetses, you can consider alternative areas to visit or even spend the night. The bay of Agia Paraskevi, at the southern coast of Spetses is one such option. It is a very beautiful place, more quite than Hinitsa, which is affected by the non-stopping come-and-go sea taxis, as well as the lighs of the big hotel. However, Hinitsa is protected from most wind directions, so choosing anchorage depends also from weather conditions. In either case, you will enjoy the nature and the wonderful sea

Day 4: Visit the Old Port of Spetses

A visit to the historic port of Spetses is nearly necessary, considering the beauty of the Town of Spetses, once home to wealthy ship owners, controlling the commercial routes in the Mediterranean Sea.

Berthing is not easy, as there is no available dock in the Old Port. Sailboats drop anchor and fix ropes on the walls, rocks, and between them (stern to bow). However, anchorage in the Old Port is stable, because the seabed is sandy and the anchor is holding well, while the depth is short, around 5-7 meters.

You would need the dinghy to go ashore, with all required precautions for being damaged, stolen, etc.

Day 5: Sail to Dokos island (10 nm)

Next day is an easy one, considering the small distance to Dokos. You may wish to have another walk in the town of Spetses, or even move the boat to the western dock (by the large hotel "Poseidonio", in order to refill the yacht with fresh water. Usually the area until Dokos is calm, but the cove is exposed to the northern winds, if they reach 20 knots at gust. Dokos islet is lovely. It generates a feeling of tranquility as there is only welcoming nature all around the cove, and the sea is wonderful.

If the northern winds are strong, and the cove is not safe, there are other alternatives, the closest is the town of Ermioni.

The cove of Agios Nikolaos, at the south of Hydra. The catamaran on the left side of the photo has fixed ropes toward the North

There are a few options in Ermioni: Either dock to the southern port of Mandrakia, protected from northern winds, or even anchor in the bay at the side of the main port of Ermioni. That area, although not particularly attractive, offers very good shelter and safe anchorage. Ermioni is a suggested place to protect from the northern winds.

Alternatively to Dokos, the western coast of Hydra also has few beautiful spots to anchor, with protection to the northern winds. It needs to look carefully, as the depths are high in most cases and the suitable space is rather limited, especially when the northern winds are strong. However, since the distance from Spetses is short, if you arrive there in the morning, you will most probably anchor safely in a marvelous spot!

Day 6: Sail to Poros island (16 nm)

Next destination is the picturesque port of Poros, 2-3 hours from Dokos. On your way to the port, you can enjoy a swim either in Tselevinia, at the edge of Peloponnese, or near the bay of Monastiri, at the southeastern coast of Poros island. It is a good idea though to enter early to the port, not later than 3 pm, since many yachts will head there, since Poros is popular in the last day of the week. Choose your spot according to the wind direction while keeping in mind that there are spots that the anchor may easily cross with other yachts. Try to predict harder situations and keep away, as much as possible.

In the evening you can walk in the beautiful pier along the port or wander in the alleys higher in the hill. There are plenty of delicious restaurants in the port, most probably you will be satisfied by the food quality in Poros. If you enter later in the port and there are no spots available, it will be easy to anchor in a protected bay at the southern coast of the island, either at the western or the eastern side of the port

Day 7: Return to Alimos marina

The last day you can make a relaxing plan: If you start from Poros, there is a good 5-hour route, so you might wish to start the day early and have adequate time for a swim at lunch time in Aegina island. Return to the home port is expected around 17:00 pm. After checking the yacht, you have plenty of time to organize a visit to Athens city center or the South Coast and close the week in an exciting way!

Embarkation takes place at 9:00 am the latest, on Saturday morning
