1 WEEK SAILING TO SKYROS ISLAND

A sailing route in the secluded island of the Sporades

This is a beautiful sailing trip in the Northern Aegean Sea. It is a route of medium to high difficulty, depending on the weather conditions and the wind force that prevail on the dates of the trip. Skyros island, the end destination of this route, is located at the center of the Aegean Sea, so it is affected by the northern winds, especially in summer months. Its long distance from other islands also increases the level of difficulty of the route.

On the other hand, the beauty of the islands is amazing, with hills covered by forests, beautiful and serene coves, picturesque towns by the ports or protected on the stiff mountains. Sporades islands offer a unique combination of sea and mountain beauty, creating a wonderful experience, when visiting on a sailing yacht.

A sailing cruise heading to Skyros in one week, requires to charter the yacht from Skiathos island. Volos is farther away from Skyros, so it would take a longer period, minimum 10 days for a relaxing sailing trip. Assumming that your trips starts from Skiathos, it would be better to finalize your plans to Skyros after checking the weather forecast for the coming week. If winds look strong, the area among the islands of Skiathos to Peristera offer a wonderful sailing area with wonderful spots, safely protected from the elements.

When sailing in the Sporades islands, it is imperative to consult us about the restricted area of the National Marine Park. There are islands, like Peristera, where special tickets must be purchased online, before visiting.

Day 1: Skiathos marina to Skopelos  island, bay of Panormos (9 nm)

Our trip started in Skiathos, where we rented our boat. Skiathos is the western-most  and most popular island of the Sporades islands. The marina is small with basic infrastructure but the island is quite beautiful with vivid life, day and night alike. We prepared the yacht and sailed away fast to the nearby island of Skopelos, in order to arrive with day light.

Our destination is Panormos, a fully protected bay at the western coast of Skopelos. There was still the gloaming light when we arrived, so we anchored safe and calm. We enjoyed a wonderful night in a beautiful, natural cove.

There are many options for anchorage in the first night of the trip. You can stay overnight in Skiathos' southern coast, few minutes only from the port, or look for a shelter in the western ports of Skopelos (Glossa, Loutraki or Agnontas). Check the weather forecast before deciding the destination for the first night of the cruise.

Day 2: The long trip to Skyros island (46 nm)

Skyros island is located in the center of the Aegean Sea, rather far from the main part of the Sporades islands. Having in mind that there was a long trip ahead, we left the cove with the first light and started sailing toward Skyros.

The weather conditions were ideal, otherwise we could not engage in this trip. We had north wind of 20 knots, gusting up to 25. We set a reef on the mainsail and sailed smoothly toward Skyros, although the waves were as high as 2 meters, maximum. There is no doubt that we enjoyed highly sailing in the Aegean Sea.

We arrived to Linaria, the main port of Skyros, in the afternoon. The small marina is well organized; a little boat came out to help us berth and the staff was waiting to help with the mooring lines. We got one of the last few spots in the marina, and our day closed care free.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner in the taverns at the port and relaxed after a long and challenging trip. We were feeling fortunate that the sailing holidays in the Sporades was proving such an excellend choice.

Day 3: Exploring the island of Skyros

Next morning we visited the Town of Skyros, up on the mountains of the island, and the breath taking Castle at the top of the Town. The landscape is wild thanks to the bold and steep hills, and the picturesque town with white houses supplements ideally the landscape. We needed to walk for nearly an hour to get to the castle, but the amazing view compensated the effort.

After the hike to the castle, we had a quick lunch in the upper town and returned to the yacht and soon left the port.

We sailed south, while the strong breeze allowed to enjoy some more sailing. We sailed coast-to-coast most of the time, admiring the natural beauty of the island; soon we reached its southernmost part. We sailed down to the islet of Sarakino but returned back to the bay of Achladi to spend the night. The bay was free from other yachts, and well protected from the northern wind, so we had an amazing night in a spot with beautiful nature.

Day 4: Sail to the islet of Skyropoula (12 nm)

Starting the day in the bay of Achladi was the best we could imagine. The landscape was wonderful, we enjoyed an early swim and we continued the exploration of the western coast of the island. We enjoyed another swim, as the winds had dropped and was safer to anchor.

In the afternoon we sailed to the islet of Skyropoula. This is another amazing destination, and also helped us reduce the total distance to return, as Skyropoula is located to the west of Skyros.

We anchored the yacht in the bay of Limani, which offers great protection to the north winds. The small islet is amazing, with immense natural beauty. Very few sailboats around, so the tranquility in that place is something that we appreciated deeply. We cooked dinner in the boat and slept early so we prepare for the next day.

Day 5: Sail from Skyropoula to Alonissos island (30nm)

Another long trip was ahead of us  and the winds were again up to 18-23 knots. We decided to set one reef on each sail, since the angle of the wind to the boat was closer now. Heading to Sporades islands is toward the North, so conditions were expected more challenging. The trip was not hard, as the waves were not high, so we enjoyed a calm and beautiful trip. We arrived in Alonissos island in the afternoon, but unfortunately the port was already full. This however was not a problem, as Alonissos is gifted with an amazing coast, full with beautiful bays. We anchored in the beach of Chrisi Milia, at the north of Patitiri port, and we had a wonderful evening within the beautiful nature.

Day 6: Sail to Skopelos island (7 nm)

The next day we sailed to Skopelos port. We felt it was time to reach a port, to refil with water and supplies for the last day. Never the less, the port of Skopelos is wonderful and offers required facilities, such as water and electricity for the yachts. You can find delicious food in the restaurants and the town is picturesque, with some wonderful houses and traditional buildings.

Although the North wind comes from the aft of the berthed yachts, it is strongly advised to drop a long anchor chain. The ferries have to enter the port with high speed, which might cause a strong swell at the dock. For the same reason, it is better to keep 1 meter distance from nearby berthing yachts

Day 7: Return trip to Skiathos port (15 nm)

Before we even realized it, we had reached almost the end of our incredible journey. Time truly does fly when you're making memories. It was time to return to Skiathos and complete this exploration of the Sporades islands. We had a delicious breakfast before leaving Skopelos port and then we headed for a swim, before returning to Skiathos. There are many wonderful spots for a swim: the coast of Milia in Skopelos west side, Stafilos bay, at the southern of Skopelos, or the islet of Tsougkria, close to Skiathos port. Regardless of your own choice, any place offers a wonderful landscape.

We arrived in Siathos port at 5 pm. We relaxed  after this wonderful experience and the night continued with dinner in the beautiful port and then a party in the busy bars. We left the boat early Saturday morning but we kept the warmest memories from this wonderful cruise in the Aegean Sea
