DISCOVER THE SERENE ISLETS OF THE DODECANESE

Sailing Holidays for one week from Kos

We spent a fabulous sailing week renting a yacht in Dodecanese, island of Kos. in the Southeastern Aegean Sea. We sailed north west, up to Patmos island, in an area gifted mostly with small islets, swimming spots with amazing rock formations and small, cozy ports. The natural beauty that we discovered in all destinations is amazing.

In terms of sailing conditions, the sailing trip from Kos has a small degree of difficulty, as the area is protected from the strong north winds of the Aegean Sea. The milder winds come with smaller waves, while the physical formation of the islands' coast, with many protected bays, offer fine shelter for the night.

The Description of the Trip

Day 1: Kos - Pserimos (12 nautical miles - nm)

On the first day of the trip, we embarked on our yacht in the afternoon. Kos marina is a major center for rental yachts, offering all the required facilities, incuding easy access to the stores.

As we left the marina in the afternoon, the ideal destination for the first day of our sailing trip was Pserimos the closest island to Kos. We arrived before the sunset and berthed in one of the few spots of the small port. There are only few houses in the port village, mostly built by the long sandy beach. We had fresh fish for dinner, in one of the small tavernas on the beach. Pserimos is an unspoiled and genuine islet, one of the last places where the tavern owner is the actual fisherman who caught the fish he served!

Plati, a wonderful islet near Pserimos
Day 2: Pserimos - Plati - Leros (21 nm)

Next day we started early, planning to visit 1-2 swimming spots before reaching the port of Panteli, in the eastern coast of Leros island. First, we made a short stop in Pserimos bay Gialos, a bay at the east side of the port, and then we sailed to the islet Plati, just at the western coast of Pserimos. We were amazed by the scarce rock formations and the crystal, transparent waters in the area. After a lot of swimming in that amazing place, we headed north to Leros.

The port of Pateli is a traditional, small village and there is a Medieval Castle mounted at the top of the surrounding mountain.

The Castle, along with the windmills at the slope of the mountain offer an impressive spectacle of the bay of Panteli. So, we preferred this picturesque village from the town of Leros, despite the the operation of the organized marina in the main port. When we arrived in Pateli, the small port was already full, so we had to moor the yacht in one of the large buoys near the port. In the evening, we visited the port by our dinghy and had dinner in one of the tavernas by the shore; a beautiful experience!

Day 3: Leros - Lipsoi (16 nm)

On the third day of our sailing cruise we headed to Lipsoi island, making a stop for swimming on the small rock of Makronisi. We enjoyed the wonderful experience of anchoring and swimming by a rock scattered in the middle of the Aegean Sea, but not too far from Lipsoi. The experience was wonderful, as we could swim in the caves of the islet, discovering a virgin world only with our masks and fins! We were planning to visit also the neighboring rocks of Aspronisi, famous for the white, shinny rocks. Unfortunately, the strong north winds in the day did not allow us to visit that islet as well. Instead, when arriving to Lipsoi, we had a quick stop in the southern bays of the island, near the rock Lyra. This was a bay with fine holding to the north wind, so we could enjoy carefree few more hours in an incredible beautiful and plain landscape.

Later, we sailed to the small port of Lipsoi, again to find the last available spot. The outer dock of the port is affected by the north wind, so berthing was not so easy this time… In the evening, we had dinner in one of the restaurants of the small town, trying delicious local recipes and fresh fish.

Bay Chrisi Ammos (Golden Sand) in Patmos island
Day 4: Lipsoi - Patmos (12 nm)

The next day we sailed to Patmos, one of the sacred islands of Christianity, where the Relevation of John was composed. The monastery dominates the view on the mountain, not very near to the town though. Before reaching the port of Patmos, we had a nice swim in the northern bay, by the rock of Agia Thekla. In the afternoon we berthed in the port; as there were no spots available in the north-wind-protected marina at the east, our available spot was on the northwest side of the port, again affected by the north wind. However, eventually we secured the yacht, like the other boats around us. The town of Patmos lacks the cute looks of smaller destinations, as the island is a major tourist attraction.

Day 5: Patmos - Marathi islet (14 nm)

Early next morning we headed to the southern side of the island and had a swim at the bay of Psili Ammos. Although the cave is slightly affected by the north wind, we anchored safely as the sandy sea bed offers good holding. This is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island and we enjoyed walking on the ‘golden’ sand which extends at the small hills by the beach, creating a rare landscape.

In the afternoon we set sail to the East and the small islet of Marathi, by the Arkioi island. Marathi is a tiny island, more like a rock, but the cove of that place offers a good holding to the North – Northwest wind. In that cove there are a few buoys offered by the tavernas of the islet. We used one for the night and had dinner in the plain taverna. The waters in the bay are crystal clear, so in the next morning we enjoyed also a beautiful swim.

Day 6: Marathi - Arkioi

As we were approaching the end of our sailing holidays in the wonderful Dodecanese islands, we decided to have a relaxing day, without long routes, but enjoy the beautiful swimming spots by the small island of Arkioi. We found the most impressive spot, perhaps of the whole trip, by the Arkioi island. The area is composed by small rocks and islets and the sea in between has a intense, turquoise colour. Swimming and snorkeling around the boat and around those tiny islets was a beautiful experience, which we just could not have enough.

In the afternoon we set sail to the small port of Arkioi. In total there are around 10 spots available for yachts to dock, so again we were lucky to find one of the last spots available.  The small port is very plain, the smallest and most cute of the destinations we had visited so far in the Dodecanese, and offers very good protection from any wind direction. All we found was 3 restaurants and few more shops, and we enjoyed dinner in one of the restaurants, near our yacht.

Day 7: Return to Kos (48 nm)

We left the longest part of the return route for the last day, totaling around 7-8 hours of sailing under normal conditions. Hence, we started with the first light of the day, so we could enjoy as much as possible the last day of our sailing trip.

The route was interesting, as we sailed near many of the islets we had stopped before. In the afternoon, we made a stop at the eastern coast of Kalimnos island, bay of Palionnisos. We were surprised by the wild natural beauty of that place, with sharp mountain slopes down the sea level. In the large bay we found buoys to berth, and we visited the tavern nearby to enjoy treats and the wonderful view. Soon, we took our way to marina of Kos, for the remaining 20 nautical miles of the route. We arrived in the afternoon as expected. We spent the last evening visiting the historic town of the island.
